The Class 5 road test asks more of you than the Class 7 did. Examiners want to see consistent observation, smooth speed control and confident decisions in heavier traffic. So that’s where we spend the time: scanning and shoulder checks until they stop being something you have to remember, lane positioning, parallel parking and hill starts, and staying calm in the situations that cost people the most points. If something still feels shaky the week before your test, tell us and we’ll drill it.

Who these lessons are for
Class 5 lessons are for drivers who already hold a Class 7N and are working toward a full licence. Most people who book fall into one of these groups:
- Novice drivers coming up on eligibility, who want the road test to be a formality rather than a gamble.
- Drivers who have failed once already and want targeted work on the specific thing that cost them, not a general refresher.
- Drivers 25 or older, who reach the upgrade sooner than they used to and want to be genuinely ready when they get there.
- Long-time N holders who have driven the same three routes for two years and know it.
- Newcomers to BC with real driving experience from elsewhere, adapting to how ICBC scores things here.

What changes on October 19, 2026
From October 19, 2026, most Class 7N drivers with a clean record will not take a second road test to reach a Class 5. ICBC replaces it with a Driving Record Assessment: instead of proving yourself in one drive, you prove yourself over months of everyday driving, and ICBC checks the record.
Two practical consequences. If your Class 5 road test is booked for October 19 or later, ICBC will cancel it and email you about next steps. And if it is booked before that date, you can still sit it the traditional way.

Do you still need Class 5 lessons?
Honest answer: if you are testing before October 19, 2026, obviously yes – there is still an examiner and still a pass mark. After that date the answer changes shape, but it does not become no.
Here is why. The assessment that replaces the test rests on a clean record: no prohibitions, no suspensions, no convictions for excessive speed or for using an electronic device. Every one of those is a habit before it is a ticket. Under the old system a bad month could be redeemed by a good test day; under the new one there is no test day to redeem it.
So the thing being assessed moved. It used to be forty minutes with an examiner. Now it is the two years you drive on your own, unsupervised, with nobody telling you that your shoulder checks stopped happening months ago. Lessons are how you find that out on purpose instead of by accident.
Lessons before October 19 versus after the change

Plenty of people are on both sides at once: eligible before the date, but not confident enough to want to test. That is worth one honest session to settle, and it is the single most common conversation we have right now.

Class 5 Lesson Packages and Prices
Most Class 5 students are not starting from scratch, so you rarely need a large package. A single 90-minute lesson is $100. Packages bring that down: $360 for four sessions, $480 for six, $620 for eight.
If you want to take the test in our car, that is an add-on that gets cheaper as the package grows: $50 with four sessions, $40 with six, $30 with eight. It covers the car, its insurance and a warm-up drive beforehand.

What Happens During a Mock Road Test?
It is a dress rehearsal. You drive a realistic route out of the same licensing office your real test will start from, and your instructor scores you the way an examiner would, quietly, without coaching you through it.
The feedback comes afterwards, and it is the honest version: what would have passed, what would have cost you points, and what would have ended the test. Most people are surprised by something small. A rolling stop. A shoulder check that never quite happens.
That is the whole point. Finding it a week early costs you one lesson. Finding it on test day costs you the test.

What happens in your first lesson
Your first lesson is an assessment drive, and we say that up front so nobody turns up expecting to be taught how to start the car.
It runs like this. A few minutes at the kerb to sort seat, mirrors and the controls of a car you have not driven before. Then you drive, on ordinary roads, while your instructor mostly stays quiet and watches. Toward the end you will usually be asked to do the things the test scores – a parking manoeuvre, a hill start, a couple of lane changes – so there is something concrete to judge.
Then you get the honest version: what is already test-standard, what is not, and how many more sessions you realistically need. Sometimes that answer is none, and we will tell you so rather than sell you a package.
Bring your licence. That is genuinely all you need.
Do you provide the car?
For lessons, yes, and it is included. You drive a modern dual-control automatic Toyota, insured for instruction, with a second brake on the instructor’s side. You do not need your own car, and you do not need anyone to supervise you.
Using our car for the ICBC road test itself is a separate thing, and it is a paid add-on rather than part of the lesson price. It costs $50 with a four-session package, $40 with six and $30 with eight, and covers the car, its insurance and a warm-up drive before you go in.
Availability depends on your test date and location, so tell us early if you are planning to use it. It is the one thing on this page worth booking further ahead than you think.
How long is a lesson?
Every lesson is 90 minutes, in the car, one to one.
That length is deliberate. An hour disappears into getting to somewhere worth practising and getting back, which leaves very little time actually working on anything. Ninety minutes is long enough to reach a real test route, run a manoeuvre until it stops being luck, and still talk through it afterwards – and short enough that you are not too tired to take any of it in.

Booking, rescheduling and cancellations
Booking is a message or a call – get in touch with roughly when suits you and where you are, and we will find a slot.
Cancel at least 24 hours ahead and your lesson is fully refunded. Rescheduling inside that window is usually fine too if we can fill the slot. Late cancellations and missed appointments may be charged a $35 fee, which exists because a no-show is a 90-minute hole nobody else can use, not because we want to charge you.
If you are ill, say so and we will move it. Nobody should be doing a hill start on two hours of sleep and a fever, and we would rather reschedule than waste your lesson.
Common questions
Until October 19, 2026, most eligible N drivers still need the road test. After that date, eligible drivers with a safe record will upgrade through a Driving Record Assessment instead.
Most drivers become eligible after holding their N for 24 months. This may be reduced to 18 months if you completed an ICBC-approved GLP course.
The examiner expects more confident decisions, consistent observation and safe driving in heavier traffic.
