Why is correct air-brake adjustment so important?
- Out-of-adjustment brakes reduce braking power and lengthen stopping distance
- B It improves fuel economy only
- C It makes the brakes quieter
- D It has no real effect
Why: When brakes are out of adjustment, less force reaches the foundation brakes, reducing braking power and increasing stopping distance.
What does the low-air-pressure warning device alert you to?
- A The parking brake is engaged
- B The brakes are fully released
- C The compressor is cycling normally
- System air pressure has dropped to an unsafe level
Why: The low-air-pressure warning (light/buzzer, often with a wig-wag) activates when pressure drops to an unsafe level so you can stop before the brakes fail.
What does "off-tracking" describe when a long vehicle turns?
- The rear wheels follow a tighter path than the front wheels
- B The front wheels lose grip on the road
- C The vehicle drifts sideways on ice
- D The trailer brakes lock up
Why: In a turn the rear wheels of a long vehicle cut inside the path of the front wheels. This is off-tracking, so you must swing wider.
As a passenger-vehicle driver, when is the safest time to let passengers board or exit?
- A While the vehicle is still rolling slowly
- B In the middle of a traffic lane
- Only when the vehicle is fully stopped in a safe location
- D On a curve
Why: Passengers should only get on or off when the vehicle is completely stopped in a safe, legal place away from traffic hazards.
Which driving habit improves fuel economy the most?
- A Rapid acceleration and hard braking
- Smooth, gradual acceleration and gentle braking
- C Frequent high-speed bursts
- D Idling for long periods to keep the engine warm
Why: Smooth acceleration and gentle, anticipated braking use far less fuel than aggressive starts and hard stops.
What licence class is required to operate a taxi or limousine for hire?
- A Class 2 licence
- Class 4 licence
- C Class 3 licence
- D Class 5 licence
ICBC Class 4 knowledge test questions
How many questions are on the ICBC Class 4 knowledge test?
You'll get roughly 50 multiple-choice questions, all pulled from ICBC's Driving Commercial Vehicles manual. Our free practice test runs the same length, so the format won't catch you off guard on test day.
What score do I need to pass the ICBC Class 4 knowledge test?
80%. That's the number ICBC actually uses, and it's what we score against here too. You'll see your result instantly, with a topic-by-topic breakdown, so you know what to brush up on before you book.
Who needs an ICBC Class 4 licence in BC?
If you're driving a taxi, limo, ride-hailing vehicle, ambulance, or a small bus or shuttle (up to 25 seats) anywhere in BC, you'll need a Class 4. There's an unrestricted version (4U) and a restricted one (4R); which one applies depends on the vehicle.
Is the Class 4 knowledge test the same as the Class 5 test?
No, it builds on it. You still need your Class 5 rules of the road, but Class 4 adds commercial-driving topics on top: heavy-vehicle braking, air brakes, pre-trip inspections, hours of service, carrying passengers safely, and more. We've split those into the 12 categories above.
Is this ICBC Class 4 practice test free?
Yes, completely: the sample questions and the full timed test, no cost either way. Honestly, the best thing you can do before test day is keep practising until you're scoring comfortably above the pass mark, not just barely over it.
Where do I take the ICBC Class 4 knowledge test near Vancouver?
Any ICBC Driver Licensing office runs the Class 4 knowledge test. In the Tri-Cities, that's the Coquitlam office, which covers Port Moody, Coquitlam, and Port Coquitlam. We're based right in Port Moody, and once you've got the knowledge test sorted, our instructors can take you through the in-car Class 4 training too.
How should I use this practice test to study?
Start with whatever makes you nervous (for a lot of people, that's air brakes or pre-trip inspections), then move on to full mixed tests until you're consistently clearing the pass mark, not just scraping by. And actually read the explanation after each question; that's what makes the rules stick, not just staring at the correct answer.
